Mamak Malaysian Restaurant (Auckland CBD, Auckland, New Zealand)

As someone who has fond memories of living in Malaysia, the flavours and aromas of Malaysian cuisine hold a special place in my heart. Mamak Malaysian Restaurant has been a go-to spot for us, particularly the now-closed Takapuna branch. Excited to try their Auckland CBD location, I recently visited the restaurant for lunch with my colleagues. Join me as I share my experience and thoughts on the dishes, we sampled from Mamak’s menu.

Nestled in Chancery Square, opposite the Obar side, Mamak offers a cosy dining experience in the bustling Auckland CBD. The restaurant features both indoor and al fresco dining options, providing a charming atmosphere for a quick lunch or a relaxed dinner.

Our culinary journey began with Crispy Spring Rolls served with sweet chili sauce. While they reminded me of the frozen ones that we usually buy in the supermarket that we adore, I wished they were homemade to add that touch of authenticity.

Next, we tried the Salt and Pepper Squid, which was cooked to perfection with a satisfying crunch. However, it lacked the flavour punch that could have elevated the dish.

Moving on to the mains, I opted for the Mamak Mee Goreng with Sunny Side. This dish stood out as one of the best Mee Goreng options in Auckland. The noodles were expertly stir-fried, packed with mouth-watering flavours, and the perfectly cooked sunny-side-up egg the Asian way, nice and runny yolk, cooked whites and the edges are crispy which added a delightful richness.

We also sampled the Mamak Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang, a classic Malaysian dish. While the coconut fragrance rice, cucumber, ikan bilis, and peanuts were on point, the sambal lacked the sweet and spicy kick I was expecting. The Beef Rendang fell short in terms of the authentic rendang flavours, beef was quite dry as well. However, the Seafood Laksa saved the day with its well-balanced spiciness, creamy broth, and generous portions of tofu, prawn, squid, bean sprouts, and egg.

Overall Experience, Mamak Malaysian Restaurant in Auckland CBD has the potential to get busy, so we were fortunate to find it relatively calm during our visit. The quick service and friendly staff added to the positive experience. The serving sizes were generous, and the reasonable pricing made dining here a real value for the location. Despite a few minor disappointments with certain dishes, the overall quality of the food remained impressive.

Mamak Malaysian Restaurant successfully brings a taste of Malaysia to the heart of Auckland CBD. While there were a few misses in terms of flavour and authenticity, the restaurant still delivers on its promise of delicious Malaysian cuisine. With its great location, friendly service, and reasonable pricing, Mamak is a hidden gem worth exploring for those seeking a flavourful journey through the streets of Malaysia. Whether you’re a fan of Asian cuisine or simply looking for a satisfying meal, Mamak Malaysian Restaurant offers an enjoyable dining experience for everyone.

Hi. I enjoy reading your reviews but wonder why you have removed details on pricing. Was this deliberate?

  2. Looks like a really tasty meal, Raymund. I want to try some of those salt and pepper squids!

Everything looks pretty decent. Yes, I wish you would indicate the prices as well – bet those are very shocking by our Malaysian standard…even without conversion into our miserable currency.
