Mr Hao (Albany, North Shore City, New Zealand)
Looking for a quick and easy way to grab some delicious Chinese cuisine? Look no further than Mr Hao in Albany. With a unique ordering system that allows you to order everything online without the hassle of trying to get someone’s attention, you won’t need to talk to waiters, making for a fast and efficient experience.
Not only is Mr Hao great for grabbing a quick meal, but it’s also an excellent spot to wind down and enjoy a drink with friends. The atmosphere is lively and inviting, and the prices are quite reasonable, especially if you take advantage of their early bird special before 6pm or their late-night special after 9pm.
One of the standout features of Mr Hao is the variety of barbecue options from different meats, seafood and even vegetables where the spice level can be adjusted individually, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their meal at their preferred level of heat. We grabbed several barbecue options, including chicken cartilage, chicken heart, beef tendon, oysters, and scallops. While some dishes, like the barbecue chicken cartilage and chicken heart, were hits with our table, others, like the barbecue scallop which tasted very fishy and tendons whose texture is not what we expected, fell flat. Most of them tasted the same, very savoury and smoky with hints of cumin and zing from chilli powder.
We also tried the Xiaolongbao, which had a delicious filling, but was not as soupy as we were expecting. The fried beef noodles were quite tasty, but be prepared for them to be a bit oily. However, our favourite dish by far were the fried buns, which were freshly cooked and had a fantastic texture, especially when paired with the condensed milk on the side.
To wash down our meal, we ordered the lychee ice tea, which was a refreshing and sweet drink. Overall, while there were some hits and misses on the menu, Mr Hao is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the Albany area. Just make sure to book a table ahead of time, as the venue is quite small and can fill up quickly. And don’t forget to take advantage of their early bird or late-night special, which offers a 3L beer tower and a big plate of wings, ribs, or seafood for just NZ$68.00.

Oysters and scallops are my favourites!
BBQ oysters are an interesting idea – I’m intrigued! I gotta say that I would let you have all of the chicken hearts, though. Pretty cool that you can adjust the spice levels individually, too!
ooh yes i do like chicken hearts. A lot of cafes here have a QR code on the table for ordering. certainly makes it easy.
What a fun find! It definitely seems like a bustling, vibrant place to have a great evening out with friends. Gotta love those affordable late night specials, too.
Fried buns with condensed milk? Gee!!! What a waste! So many things that they could have paired them with, curry…chili crabs…Vietnamese prawns, braised pork belly… Yum yum! I would love those a lot more than just…condensed milk!
