Le Macaron (Takapuna, North Shore City, New Zealand)

I guess everyone knows what a macaron but have you heard about Fatcaron? or even Shellcaron? Well, if not basically those two are a type of macaron and as the name suggest Fatcaron is a fat macaron and Shellcaron is a Macaron in a shell shape. So, what is special about these types of macarons? They are overloaded with fillings and it’s not anymore restricted to jams and buttercream as most of them have other ingredients on it such as whole chocolates, nuts, cookies and even fruits to name some, being fat means you can give it more of an aesthetic look as the pastry chef who makes them can make intricate designs from the fillings. Fillings are not overly sweet becuase the variety of ingredients other than just the cream needs to balance out.

We had tried fatcaron many times already and our favourite one is Daldang but this is our first time to try Shellcaron which tastes nearly similar but shaped in a shell form and instead of a flat sandwich style presentation, the top layer of this one is angled. I know Daldang already offers this variety, but we are trying a new place today called Le Macaron in Takapuna.

Le Macaron like Daldang offers Fatcaron and Shellcaron, they also offer Coque Flakes, Basque Cheesecake, Cookies and a few Fruity Drinks. So how does their Fatcaron compare? Well Daldang was quite really good and its one hard to beat so the bar was set high, for Le Macaron, it was not as good but better than other macarons out there, I just find the cookies are quite dry, was expecting it to be more softer, it was a bit crumbly, they also suggest to remove it from the fridge a few minutes before consumption to give the butter cream a nice texture, I tried it cold and thawed and it felt like there is quite a bit of butter as it was hard fresh from the fridge but perfect after 5 minutes outside of it. Overall, it would be probably around 6.5 to 7.0 out of 10.

At the moment the flavours are quite limited, there were 6 during our last visit and we tried them all, great flavour selection, hopefully in the future they add more varieties. The current flavours on offer are Mango Cheese Yogurt, Earl Grey, Oreo, Chocolate , Cherry and Cheesecake. It was quite pricy, more expensive than a Fatcaron as each one of them costs around NZ$6.20 each or NZ$33.00 for a half dozen. On a plus note staff are super friendly people and it was quite easy to order. It is quite a new business so I expect things will get better in the future as they hone their skills in making them. It was good but if it’s not for Daldang who set a high standard, this will be the best fatcaron in Auckland.

  1. Wow! I actually teach classes in Macarons and these definitely are way over the top! They look like fat sandwiches. Mango Cheese Yogurt sounds like a nice filling I could try, but I would probably use the traditional ‘flat cookie’ shape!

  2. They look so tempting and addictive! I’d better stay away from these :-))

Wow, those are incredible! Truly edible works of art.
