Pipos Lechon (Kelston, Auckland, New Zealand)

If you happen to live in Auckland and ever need a whole lechon in your life, then look no further as we found the best New Zealand lechon so far, we tried to date at Pipos Lechon. Usually when you buy lechon they usually come in very large sizes. At Pipos the size they sell is just right, not too small and not too big, probably around 25 kilos, so they are not really the hard mature pigs usually used for lechon. The lechon they sell would perfectly fit in your car boot without the need to pull those back seats down.

The good thing with this size is that the pig size is enough to feed a lot, but the meat is still tender and succulent like a cochinillo as long as they are prepared right. They are also not gamey and have that porky smell with the help of the usual herbs and spices used on the Filipino lechon which gives it an aromatic hunger inducing aroma.

The last time we tried this was for a big celebration and it indeed fed a lot of people, the meat was still juicy even though we picked it up in the morning and served on a lunch time. The skin was very crisp and thin, and even without sauce, its already good on its own.

Pipos also sell them in smaller batches by the kilo if you ever crave for some, so no need to buy the whole lechon to satisfy those cravings. They also sell other dishes which we tried many times, classic Filipino dishes, and they do impart a feeling it is home made. If you buy a whole lechon the owner will also throw in some freebies if you ask so it is a steal. As for the price it varies, the per kilo one is quite pricey at $40.00 per kilo but for the whole roast pig they are quite reasonable, just give them a call as it all depends on how large the lechon is.

An ex girlfriend of mine had her father roasting a pig on a spit in her back garden for her birthday. (She was Italian). It was amazing and this post reminded me of just that! 🙂

  4. This is the restaurant that I want to visit!! Those pork rinds are amazing. I just had 50 grams this morning as the dessert after a juicy ribeye steak for the breakfast :-))

  5. Wow, what a looker! We used to live close to a Cuban restaurant where we could get a whole suckling pig. I’m jealous — I want one of those! 🙂
