Thai Street (Wynyard Quarter, Auckland CBD, New Zealand)
It has been a long time since we visited Wynyard Quarter, I think the last time was more than a year ago and since then a lot has changed, Silo Park just got bigger and there are a lot of new developments around the area. There were also heaps of restaurants that had closed after struggling with the lockdowns but there are also restaurants that survived and one of them was this Thai Street. We tried a lot of places here in Wynyard Quarter and Thai Street was on our list to try before but Pandemic hit so there was no opportunity to give it a shot until recently.
We came around an hour before they close for the night, it was just after our choir service at the Cathedral. We already had dinner beforehand, as I don’t want to feel hungry as we sang so we just wanted some light snacks before we head home. It was a quiet night probably because it was late and most people were are the restaurants that close late and with bars, this means there were lots of tables free and it was quiet, perfect time to unwind.
We grabbed several items and for our finger food it was the Golden Money Bag (4pcs) (NZ$12.50), prepared with minced chicken, prawn and chestnut.
The next one was the Curry Puff (4pcs) (NZ$12.50), prepared with kumara, onion and yellow curry.
For larger plates we grabbed some Pork belly Pad Prik Khing (NZ$24.50), a pork belly dish cooked in a red curry paste with green peppercorns, krachai and green beans.
Then a dine in on a Thai restaurant won’t be complete without a Pad Thai, so we grabbed one Pad Thai Gai (NZ$20.50), made with stir fried rice noodle, egg, crushed peanut, bean sprout and chives.
The food was good, we especially liked the Golden Money Bag which the fillings tasted nearly like our Siomai recipe. I also like the Pad Thai, the flavours was well balanced, it was sweet, sour, savoury, with a small kick, what’s even better is that this one was filled with tons of chicken, it almost outnumbered the noodles. Curry puff was unique due to the use of sweet potatoes rather than normal potatoes, it also adds a nice sweetness to the overall dish.
While the prices may seem high, it is understandable since it is in a prime spot in the CBD. Other than that, everything went well with our visit, service was great, food portions was fine, the quality was great and most important of all, it was delicious.
