Duck Island Ice Cream (Ponsonby, Auckland, New Zealand)

Its summer and the best way to beat that heat is a good ‘ol ice cream and there’s nothing better to deliver that nowadays than this new joint in Ponsonby, the Duck Island Ice Cream. After the lockdown here in Auckland this place is always packed with long queues and we were there one day to give it a shot.

While Duck Island is a new shop in the district of Ponsonby, we just figured it out that this ice creamhas been existing in Waikato since 2015. Made high quality ingredients using the freshest, best quality seasonal ingredients we can source, all of what the offer are handcrafted. You might see them before in supermarkets but if not the best way to give this a shot is by visiting their location at Ponsonby where they offer many unique flavours, 50 items that rotate so the flavour you might taste now may not be available on other days.

To give you an idea of what unique flavours they had on offer we grabbed several of them, 7 flavours on three different cones. So, we grabbed some Santa Snacks, Roasted White Chocolate Miso and Butterscotch Pecan for the Double; for the two singles we grabbed some Maple Honeycomb w/ Smoked Almond and Blueberry Buttermilk Gooey Butter Cake on one and White Chocolate Macadamia Pomegranate and Raspberry Ambrosia for the other.

While the exotic flavours and the hand-crafted process might sound expensive, their prices are very reasonable in fact it is cheaper than most ice cream shops in Auckland. For single size with 2 scoops its NZ$6.00, a double with 3 scoops its NZ$8.00, Triple with 4 scoops its NZ$9.50 but if you want to go all out, they have what they call Flight for NZ$13.00 that is served with 8 small scoops with wafers.

Everything was good, the flavours advertised stood out, most of them are not too overly sweet, there are some that are sweeter than usual like the Roasted White Chocolate Miso, probably the saltiness of miso might have pronounced the sweetness. Santa Snacks felt like Christmas, some hints of gingerbread and eggnog but I am not sure what’s on it. My favourite was the Raspberry Ambrosia because of its sweet and sour flavour but still creamy. Overall, it was one of the best ice cream flavours we tried, there is a premium feel to it without the hefty price tag, definitely well worth the long queue.
