High Country Salmon (Twizel, New Zealand)
Last time we vested Lake Tekapo and its surroundings was five years ago, during that time one of our itineraries was this Salmon Farm, sadly we did not make it during that time because we were quite tired and we not enough time to spare for our itinerary that day so we did not bother to go a bit further than Mount Cook Alpine salmon, the place we stopped over to grab some bite. We decided to stay at that place instead before heading back to Lake Tekapo. This time around was different, instead of coming from the North we came from the South so Twizel will come in first and there are no reasons not to visit this place, the High-Country Salmon.
So, what do you expect here? It’s a salmon farm where you can have a nice meal at the floating café, floating deck, under the veranda, or at a picnic table in the garden amid the breath-taking scenery. And since salmon are their main product, you can enjoy a selection of ready-to-eat foods including sashimi and sushi, as well as salmon-inspired Breakfast and All-Day menus like Salmon Burgers, Salmon Chowder or Grilled Salmon with Salsa Verde. All of which they call the “Glacier to Plate” experience, premium chinook salmon straight to your plate from the glacial waters of the Southern Alps. You can also feed the fish from the deck and see the salmon fight for it while splashing all its way, really good activity for the kids.
You can also buy some take away stuff, we wish we could, but for those who are prepared with some chilly bins or styro boxes and if your flight back to Auckland is in the afternoon of that day then feel free to grab some of their vacuum-packed salmon products from fresh, smoked or cured salmon in a variety of cuts.
So, if you will pass by the place even if this is not in your itinerary, it is worthwhile to do so. Indeed, it is a fabulous place to stop in, just to relax, dine or even just to break the drive. The site and scenery are breath-taking, it will definitely relax your senses before moving on to your next destination.

I have never been to a salmon farm…such an interesting experience!
What a cool opportunity! I’ve never visited a salmon farm, but I would love to learn more about it!
Salmon, my girl’s favourite! Costs a bomb here!!! We get the farmed ones here, not cheap…and usually from Chile. The Norwegian air-flown ones, also farmed, are even more expensive.
