Koiya (Auckland CBD, New Zealand)

When it comes to Japanese restaurant our usual orders are Ramen or Sushi, we barely order Kastu dishes because for me it’s just a regular fried dish that I can cook at home easily so I am not bothered ordering them. Katsu can also be dry hence when I do order one, I make sure it is Katsu curry and nothing else, until recently. Our place today is what made me order just a regular katsu, I heard from a lot of people that they make good ones and that’s what I was trying to find out on our visit here.

I came here for a quick late night feed, most restaurants beside this place were already closed. Unlike most of my restaurant reviews we will be focusing only on one dish today, the katsu and nothing else. They have many options if you are a katsu lover, like the they also have other katsu options like the Miso Chicken Katsu, Honey Garlic Chicken Katsu, Original Chicken Katsu, Cheese Chicken Katsu, Fish Katsu and Prawn Katsu. They also have katsu curries and katsudon so options are plenty. Upon looking at the options I got more interested with the Cheese Chicken Katsu (NZ$17.50) so that’s what I ordered.

Service was quick, and it was freshly cooked. Initial impression was good, the chicken looks crisp and the insides looks juicy, the cheese used is the processed sliced ones, I am cool with that but other might not, I think it suits well to the dish like using them on burgers. First bite was great, they really make some good katsu, perfectly crisp breading, the chicken was quite juicy and well-seasoned, it does not feel oily as well. Katsu was served with a type of sweet soy sauce, salad, mayonnaise, rice, and pickled ginger. The cheese was a nice addition, it added a different texture and dimension to its flavour. The serving size is not too small nor too big, just enough but if you’re quite hungry I suggest you order something extra.

Overall I liked it, the place was clean, the staff were friendly and price here was just alright.

  1. I don’t like sushi and ramen…if I visited a Japanese restaurant, I would love to try their sashimi and teppanyaki. That Cheese Chicken Katsu looks very good though.

I had Katsu Japanese curry with rice here:
It was good but personally, I prefer our Malaysian curry a lot more or those of our SE Asian countries…or India.
Japanese curry is kind of mild.

It’s actually pretty rare to find Japanese restaurants around here offering any kind of katsu, let alone a number of unique varieties. I hope that more people celebrate all facets of the cuisine; I just love Japanese food!

I would be disappointed with the cheese so it was great that you mentioned it. We haven’t been inside a restaurant since March 2020!
