Hearty Stroganoff

Hearty Stroganoff is a Russian dish of sautéed pieces of beef served in a sauce with sour cream cooked together with herbs and spices such as onion, garlic, paprika, pink Himalayan salt, pepper, and parsley.

Do you like using packet mixes for your dinner? Well for me I used them a lot because of their convenience and the lack of its fresh counterpart hence most of our usual sinigang, kare kare, palabok, gravy and even butter chicken these packet sauces are involved. I do tend to minimize using them hence if I have the time and ingredients, I try to make these things from scratch just to avoid the extra ingredients on these mixes such preservatives, additives, and excessive salt. But yes making it from scratch is labour and time intensive luckily there is one brand that I recently discovered and it’s all natural, additive free and noting of the nasties, meet Mingle.

Mingle brand was started by a young female entrepreneur name Jordyn Evans, where she was out to challenge FMCG giants in the dinner convenience, recipe base category, launching this brand of seasoning into 180 Countdown stores.

Jordyn says: What’s for Dinner?’ Is the common daily question all households struggle with? We’re all looking for time saving solutions and cooking hacks to make our lives easier. I want to help people realise that healthy can be delicious and that delicious can be quick and easy.

Driven to bring innovation, health, and ingredient transparency back to the Recipe Base category, Jordyn saw a gap to challenge FMCG giants with something NEW, fun, fresh, and healthy. She launched 7 of her NO NASTY 30 min meal base flavours into 180 Countdown stores in February. The flavours include Butter Chicken, Curry in a Hurry, Taco Mexican Fiesta, Red Curry, Green Curry, Hearty Stroganoff, and Satay Stir Fry.

With consumers spending an increased amount of time at home, and out of home eating options in many markets remaining curtailed due to the pandemic restrictions, consumers are looking for products which can simplify and speed up food preparation at home. Further to this people are also more conscious of health now more than ever and in the year to January 2021, natural claims were seen in 63% of stock, sauces and seasoning launches in Australia, the highest of the major APAC markets.

Mingle contains no added sugar, are lower amounts of sodium, has no fillers (flours), no refined vegetable oils or preservatives.

When Jordyn was 25 she was cleaning out her pantry and noticed the nasties in the spice and seasonings. This led her to start to Mingle by selling her car and moving back home to bootstrap her new start-up.

Jordyn adds:Rather than see cooking as a chore, we want people to see it as an opportunity to create together, experiment, learn, nourish one another and connect with our households. Often it takes an extreme event to shake things up, change our behaviours and for us to realign with what’s important to us. Last year it took me burning out, being disconnected from family and friends and my Nan passing away for me to wake up to what really matters. This experience woke me up to how easy it is to lose the value of the simple things in life and the daily rituals that bring so much value, including cooking and connecting around a dinner table.

Whilst Jordyn is still bootstrapping the business and out to challenge the big guys, she attributes her success to her community (80,000 + followers), genuine advocacy from health professionals, the power of word of mouth and creating a flavoursome brand that gets people excited to create the kitchen.

I am trying six of their seasonings and we will be starting today with this Hearty Beef Stroganoff, if you check the ingredients, they are all natural where it is only made with onion, garlic, paprika, pink Himalayan salt, pepper and parsley. What’s even good is the recipe is all written at the back and they are easily to follow, then the best part, everything is ready in 30 minutes as long as you follow the instructions off course. I did swayed out a bit on their recipe where I slightly increased the amounts of meat, tomato paste, sour cream and stock plus I added some garlic and with the same amount of seasoning the result was still amazing, honestly it was one of the best Beef Stroganoff I ever made.

Hearty Stroganoff is a Russian dish of sautéed pieces of beef served in a sauce with sour cream cooked together with herbs and spices such as onion, garlic, paprika, pink Himalayan salt, pepper, and parsley.

  • 700 g beef rump steak, thinly sliced
  • 200 g fresh white button mushrooms, sliced
  • 30 g sachet Mingle hearty stroganoff
  • 400 ml beef stock
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 large white onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • olive oil
  • salt
  • freshly ground black pepper

  1. In a large pan heat oil in very high heat then once it starts to smoke add the sliced beef then brown it on all sides. Remove from the pan then set it aside.
  2. Add additional olive oil to the pan, then in medium heat sauté garlic and onions. Once onions are soft add the mushrooms and cook while stirring for two minutes.
  3. Add the tomato paste then cook for one more minute.
  4. Pour the beef stock and the sachet contents, bring it to a boil then add the beef back, bring back to a boil then simmer in very low heat for 10 minutes.
  5. Stir in the sour cream, season with salt, and freshly ground black pepper then serve.

Packet instruction states 500 g protein, 300 ml stick, 2 tbsp tomato paste and 3 tbsp sour cream but even with my adjustments above, the result was still amazing, in fact it was really tasty. I guess if I followed the instructions to the dot, the taste would be much stronger for me.

  1. I do like quality packet mixes … they make life so much easier. I usually enjoy beef simply with salt and pepper, but I would love to taste your Stroganoff as it looks really good.
