Coromandel Takeaways (Coromandel, New Zealand)
Since we can’t travel overseas at the moment, one of the long weekends last summer we travelled locally and went for a camping at Shelly Beach in Coromandel. We stayed here for three days and it was a stunning location, great amenities, situated on a secluded beach front, facing West so you will see amazing sunsets. Once the sun had set, the camp site sets up this outdoor movie by the beach so you can start unwinding before you snooze on your tents.
During daytime, you can choose to stay back as it is not scorching hot due to the trees around the area unlike other campsites where they are out in the open. But if you opt not to chill and relax, you can visit the many stunning locations Coromandel has offer like the Hot Water Beach, Waterworks, Cathedral Cove, walk the Pinnacles or just enjoy the fresh produce this place had to offer. We did almost all of that apart from the Pinnacles walk.
After a day of sightseeing, we head back to the camp late in the afternoon. To save us some preparation and cooking time, we decided to have a typical Kiwi meal, some Fish and Chips on a takeaway shop near our camp. Since were hungry after walking back and forth to the Cathedral Cove, we were not fussed where to eat and we want something quick, luckily we saw this Coromandel Takeaways in the Town Centre and this is where we will be having our early dinner of Fish and Chips.
This place was quite busy, when we visited there were many people waiting for their orders to come. We have our orders in mind, so we went straight for it and ordered a Fish and Chips Combo (NZ$16.00) which contains 2 pieces of fish, chips, coleslaw, and a drink. We also grabbed one their version of Whopper Burger (NZ$12.90) which is made with two beef patties, bacon, mushroom, egg, and cheese. Orders came quite quick and in minutes we are enjoying these delicious treats.
The Fish and Chips was amazing, I am not sure what fish they used but it must be a Kahawai or Trevally, I might be wrong but one thing for sure, they were fresh. It was juicy and you can see the melting collagen as you rip the meat apart, the batter was so crispy, it was perfect. The serving size was worthy of a mention too, as this single order can feed two people, the fish portions were large and there was plenty of chips. Chips was great too, not to thick and not too thin; it was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, there were no soggy chips at all. I rate this as a 9 out of 10.
Then we had this massive burger, never thought it would be as massive as this, but it was nowhere near the size of the original Whopper, this was way much bigger, and the patties were thick. You can make two burgers out of this. It was messy as it was a hefty bite, we ended up dividing it into two section so we can eat it properly. Again, another great dish and will feed anyone with a good hunger.
Overall, it was a great experience, we had a classic Kiwi meal, near the beach, on a picnic table and an afternoon sun, it’s as New Zealand as it gets. And what’s best is we had this great simple good meal spent with our loved ones.

Ooooo…miss the fish and chips in NZ – they’re so so good!!! Lucky you, can still travel around – we’re restricted here. Dunno when all this is going to end.
That place looks like a lot of fun – so glad you get to find and enjoy it! And those fish and chips…and that burger…now I’m hungry!
