Sizzling Tofu

Sizzling Tofu is a Filipino dish of twice cooked tofu, first by pan frying or deep frying then seasoned with oyster sauce and chillies, tossed in mayonnaise before it is served on a sizzling hot plate with freshly chopped onions.

Another tofu dish but don’t worry, the tofu recipes I am posting here are all guaranteed tasty. Sizzling Tofu is a Filipino favourite, popularised by a well-known restaurant chain in the Philippines called Max restaurant. As described by the restaurant as “Tofu cubes with chopped onions, red and green bell peppers, glazed with a special sauce. Served on a hot sizzling plate, topped with chili” and that the inspiration of our recipe today. Its creamy, its spicy, it has a lot of texture, from crispy to soft. A perfect side dish, beer match or even ulam.

While I really haven’t tried the Max’s version, this is quite easy to recreate based on the description on their site. All I need to know is how to make that special sauce. The special sauce may be a secret but there are clues leading to how it would taste like via the flavour profile of Filipino dishes. Having that in mind, I guess this would be sweet and savoury, so for the sauce I will just be using oyster sauce which is widely available back home.

This looks wonderful and a great way to get the husband to enjoy tofu rather than just tolerate it. 🙂 Need to give this a try. Thanks Raymund and hope you are having a wonderful holiday season.
