Mamak – 2020 Menu (North Shore City, New Zealand)

Mamak is one of our go to Malaysian restaurants if we are craving for some Malay dishes, this is one of our primary choices alongside Uncle Man’s, PappaRich and Chef Rasa Sayang, each one of them reminds me of Malaysia where I used to work and live for four years, it was my second home before.

We visit Mamak once in a while, it’s quite accessible for us because its near home and this is what we had during the last visit. First was this Mamak Nasi Lemak (NZ$16.50) Coconut Fragrant rice served with cucumber, ikan bilis, peanut, egg, spicy sambal and we got the Beef Rendang one. The rendang was amazing, full of flavour and it has this nice bouncy texture to the meat, it’s not dry and very aromatic.

Next is this Mamak Mee Goreng , basically a Mamak style fried noodle with beansprout, prawn, dry tofu and eggs. You can’t get wrong with this one, so delish and the quality and taste did not change through these years.

Another noodle dish was this Char Kuay Teow + Mee “KTM” (NZ$15.50), another great noodle dish this time prepared with Char Kuay Teow with Yellow Noodle served with squid, prawn, egg and beansprouts. It’s a nice combo of two noodles, you’re getting the best of both worlds here.

Finally my go to Malaysian comfort meal, the Nasi Goreng Chicken (NZ$16.00), come on, any fried chicken will make your day, add to that the extras of peanuts, ikan bilis, cucumbers and that crispy thing on the side, you are in rice heaven.

Mamak feels like a real mamak, it’s that food stall in the corner that you crave for when you want something, honest to goodness dishes that are inexpensive and filling.
