Phil Greig Strawberry Gardens Ice Cream (Kumeu, New Zealand)
Few more days to enjoy that Auckland summer heat and as we head into Autumn lets reminisce what summer had offered us. Summers for Kiwi’s are synonymous to barbecues, beaches, music festivals, Pohutukawa trees, hiking and real fruit ice creams. Although summer came late this year (usually it gets hot in November and December, the real summer came around January) we still did enjoyed that a lot, which means we did all the activities mentioned above in a compressed number of days and luckily summer sun here in New Zealand starts at 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM at night.
We did a lot of tramping at the Waitakere ranges and anywhere where there are waterfalls, had a several dips at Tawharanui and Omaha beaches , definitely a lot of barbecue with friends and of course several visits to PYO fruits and that means real fruit ice cream. There was one near our place called Sweet Red Strawberry but to my surprise when we paid that one a visit, it moved to a new location and a new subdivision was being built in where it was originally located. Luckily there was one nearby which was 10-minute drive from where the Sweet Red Strawberries were.
Phil Greig Strawberry Gardens was the place and perhaps this was one of the most popular fresh strawberry ice creams in Auckland. And if you don’t know this place by name, you probably would have remembered that strawberry shop sign on your left when you drive SH16 going to Helensville. When I first came in New Zealand in 2006 this was already here, it was even the first real fruit ice cream I had in New Zealand, it’s just nostalgic.
We came quite late, it think around 4:00 PM after having a late lunch after a nice walk at North Head Historic Reserve. It was packed with people when we came in and we are just after the real fruit ice cream. I certainly changed these years, I remembered the last time I saw this place, probably 4 years ago, it looks tattered and old but now its vibrant and thriving, they even have outdoor tables for patrons to sit down and relax with their ice creams.
Ice cream quality though did not change, it was the same old delicious naturally sweet strawberry ice cream. A nice way to beat the summer heat and since the servings was huge, this can also be your lunch or dinner, it was so satisfying. I am not sure if it’s now too late for you to head in but keep this place in mind the next summer.
