Omurice

Omurice is a Japanese dish prepared with fried rice cooked with meats like chicken or ham with vegetables, seasoned with ketchup then served enclosed in an omelette.

Omurice or Omuraisu as what the Japanese pronounce it is a type of yōshoku (Japanese style Western Food) prepared with fried rice and omelette. As the name suggest the name came from the words “Omelette” (Omu) and “Rice” (Rice). Omurice was said to have originated around the turn of the 20th century in Renga-tei, a western-style restaurant in Tokyo’s Ginza district. It was believed to have been inspired by a type of sushi called Chakin Zushi.

A very popular dish in Japan and a favourite dish by the young ones. Traditionally omurice is prepared with chicken as the protein of choice for the fried rice, omelette is also prepared thinly but todays version can have other proteins like ham or thin slices of pork while the egg preference changed to a more thicker softer scrambled eggs with a thin layer of well-done eggs which makes it look amazing when the diner slices through the eggs.

It’s a very simple dish but for first timers its quite hard to prepare, especially when you think of wrapping that rice on omelette, how do I do that? Don’t worry, if you are preparing it at home, you can just wrap it around the rice rather than enclose the whole thing, anyways regardless of the presentation, the amazing sweet savoury taste of the rice will never change.
