Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart (Auckland CBD, New Zealand)
Let’s start with a little bit of trivia. Where does this cheese tart originated? If Japan is your guess then you’re wrong but don’t worry that was my first guess as well, this brand originated in Malaysia then brought over to Australia and New Zealand but there is still a bit of Japan in there, as it was inspired from the cheese tarts from Hokkaido.
I have been eying this product for quite some time now but what hinders me is that I thought it was similar to the Macanese Egg Tarts, hence when I see this in Queen St in Auckland I think twice and always bought something else.
One day my daughter came home with one pack and it was my first time to taste it, I was surprised, well surprised as it was a totally different tart than I expected. Totally different to the egg tarts I know, while both are amazing in their own right here is the difference in my perspective.
First is the pastry, the party of this tart is a shortcrust instead of the flakyvariant. Second the filling is made with what I guess is cream cheese as opposed to the eggs, I am not sure if it has eggs but the taste does not suggest. Finally, the taste is so much different, egg tarts are light, smooth and eggy, this one is dense, slightly runny, very creamy and mildly sweet. I felt like I am eating some light cheese cake, it was amazing. The texture is something to die for, it was so smooth which is perfect to that shortcrust pastry. I love it!
