Sardines and Upo Misua is a simple soup dish of canned sardines sautéed with garlic and onions then cooked with bottle gourd and flour vermicelli


  • 125g misua noodles
  • 400 g canned sardines in tomato sauce (this is the large can)
  • 1/2 small bottle gourd (upo), peeled and sliced
  • 1 small red onion, sliced
  • 6 cloves garlic minced
  • 4 cups water
  • oil
  • fish sauce
  • salt


  1. In a soup pot add oil then sauté garlic and onions
  2. Add the sardines with the sauce then cook for a couple of minutes.
  3. Pour the water and add the bottle gourd, bring to a boil then simmer in low heat for 8 minutes
  4. Add the misua and continue to simmer for 2 minutes.
  5. Season with fish sauce and freshly ground black pepper turn off heat then serve.
