Rusty Pelican (Matakana, New Zealand)
Two days ago, we reviewed a place who serves generous amount of food and it looks like it’s becoming a trend because the place we will be reviewing today serves big portion as well, and what’s even better is that it is in the restaurants philosophy where they thrive on generous servings in addition to serving top quality food and friendly prompt service and I can attest to that.
During our last visit to Matakana we usually just grab some ice cream from the popular Oob Stall but since it was nearly lunch, we decided to dine in on this infamous corner restaurant, it was still quite early for lunch but we still a have an hour to drive to our destination hence we stopped by. It was a large restaurant by out of Auckland standards, it was so huge I think it can seat more than a 100 people, a family restaurant style with sports bar, playground and some billiard tables.
At first, we did not know what to order, like I said it was early lunch and we are not quite hungry yet until we saw the waiters serving other diners their orders. I was particularly attracted to the pizza and green lipped mussels the nearby table had ordered so we grabbed some of those.
Starting with the Steamed Green Lipped Mussels (NZ$19.50), a dish of Fresh Green Lipped mussels smothered in a creamy garlic & white wine sauce, served with garlic pizza bread. This was heaven on a plate, the fresh mussels were amazing and the sauce was uber delicious perfect with that garlic pizza bread that it is accompanied with. I particularly loved the sauce, I nearly drank it after finishing up all my meaty mussels. We grabbed a small portion but it was still huge by any standards, served with at least a dozen good quality large mussels that were three to four inches in length.
The we had some of their Rusty Pelican’s famous pizzas in a form of Tony Pepperoni (NZ$25.00), basically a loaded pizza that have much more the toppings than you’d expect on a typical pizza and it was topped with Rusty’s own tomato pizza sauce, pepperoni and 100% mozzarella. I know it’s not your typical Italian pizza but it was as good, a different league on its own.
Then for sour sides we had some Chicken Nibbles (NZ$18.50) made with Quality Organic Bostock’s Chicken grilled and smothered with classic hoisin & sesame seed sauce, served with coleslaw and fries, another good serving of one dozen sticky sweet savoury chicken wings that you want to nibble to the bones.
And who said we were not hungry? We came here for a snack and we got a generous serving of lunch. Another recommended place, especially when you pass by Matakana during lunch time, do not worry about reservation because even this place can become really busy, they have a large space for you and your family.
