Running a restaurant is hard work although ultimately very rewarding. Of course it helps if you have a love of food and preparing it for others.
But that’s not enough to ensure you have a successful business. There are 5 essential must haves when running a restaurant:

1. Unique Concept

There are hundreds of restaurants in every city. It doesn’t matter if you’re just starting up or have been trading for years; you need a unique concept.
It is this that will get the initial interest and persuade people to come and visit. The quality of your food should be enough to keep them coming back time after time.

2. The Right Location

Of course you need to have a restaurant in the right place. If you have no passing trade or easy access parking then it is unlikely you’ll do well.
Of course there are exceptions; restaurants opened by famous celebrities or chefs can open almost anywhere and will be virtually guaranteed to be successful. But this probably isn’t an option for you.

It is therefore essential that you find a location which tells the story you want to tell while being convenient to an array of diners.

3. A Good Supplier

Even the best restaurants are at the mercy of their suppliers. Whether you’re after cafeteria supplies, food, drink or something else you need to develop a relationship with a company that you can trust and that has a good reputation.

This will help to ensure that you have everything you need to make your business a success. It doesn’t mean it will be easy but it is definitely easier than if you have no supplies.

4. Staff

The best restaurants need staff. If you’re not a chef then you’ll need someone to create the dishes you’re visualizing. You’ll also need waiters and waitresses to ensure the customers get their order taken and the right food delivered.

Alongside this it is important to have a structure in place that allows you to review and move forward the careers of those that work hard for you. This will help to keep them motivated and ensure the customer gets the best possible experience every time.

5. A Goal

Finally it is essential that you set yourself a long term goal and several short term, attainable goals. A set of goals is important as they give you the drive to keep being the best. But, they also provide you with direction; helping to ensure that every decision your make is helping drive your restaurant forward so that you can reach your goal.

It’s a good idea to get your staff involved with your goal; it will help to motivate them and boost morale. They may even have some ideas that you haven’t thought of to ensure you get where you want to be.

The bottom line when running a restaurant is to remember that the service the customer receives makes the difference between a return visit or not. Of course good quality food also helps.
