Velvet Burger (Auckland CBD, New Zealand)
This was quite a hype several months ago and I was not one of the first ones who rode that bandwagon, though I love burgers once in a while, I never crave them plus it was quite a walk from my office so I would rather go to somewhere near. Few weeks ago, after an early night out in the city we managed to pass by this place, this time no more massive queue compared to its early days, in fact there were only few people dining in when we came.
Their menu is quite straightforward, choose a burger, a side and some drinks. Drinks can be beer, wine and soft drinks, easy as that. You can customize your burger but I think it was good as it is. We started with a fries they called Fatties (NZ$5.00), I guess you know why it was called like such, where we paired it with some Aioli sauce (NZ$1.00), it was a good fries nothing spectacular.
We then grabbed two different burgers, one beef and another is chicken. For the beef I opted for the Cheesy Bro (NZ$12.90), as stated on their menu “He’s that mate with all the one liner, dad jokes – he’s the Cheesy Bro! He couldn’t taste any better with beef, double cheese (yes, you read that right), gherkin, salad, American mustard, relish and aioli.”. Basically, this is Velvet Burgers take on the classic Cheese Burger.
Then we have the Velvet Lady (NZ$14.90), and likewise as stated on their menu, “Everybody wants her but she keeps it classy just like your mum back in the day – grilled chicken breast, salad, bacon, avocado and cheese with relish and aioli.”. Moist chicken breast with avocado and bacon, one of the best chicken burger combinations ever.
Overall, I liked it, the burgers were surprisingly light on your tummy, it was easy to eat and you don’t feel the heaviness after finishing one. Perfect size and perfect amount, it’s just right to ease that hunger. It was also delicious, clean taste and not very oily. I like this one for a snack!
