Goldfish Kitchen (North Shore City, New Zealand)

We went to this place without any clue what they were offering and it was quite new when we visited but now I think they are operation for nearly a year now. It was lunch time and we are hungry, it is a bad idea to look for places you don’t know when this happens because you will have a wrong judgement since your focus is to eat, looking for a good place is not an option (at least that’s what happen with me).

It was exactly the case when we dined in here, like I initially said we don’t have any idea on what this place serves. We sat down and ordered what we fancy from the menu. There were not a lot of options mostly pork stir fries on rice plus some seafood and tofu.

While thinking on what to order the usual Chinese tea arrived and in a couple of minutes we decided.

First we ordered some Boiling Oil Scalded Fish ($18.80) which is basically thinly sliced white fish scalded in searing hot oil, I had high hopes on this one since I tried something similar in Malaysia before and it was phenomenal, the one we had here was quite a let-down, it lacks seasoning and when it was served to us it was cold.

Then after that first order we saw people ordering lots of Chinese pancakes and steamed buns perhaps this is their specialty? Well it was too late to back down since our second order started to arrive. It was the Sautéed Pork Liver with Rice ($9.80), this one was quite good and flavourful, I think any liver lover would love this dish.

And for our last order we had this Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce and Rice ($9.80), again this was good but for people who don’t like bamboo shoots do not get this because half of it was made with bamboo shoots, and the smell is quite strong.

I know this are more exotic dishes to some so if you are not ready for dishes like this then don’t even try to dine in here as you will be dissatisfied but if you love dishes like this then go ahead and give it a shot. I think I am that person in between hence I liked some and disliked others, perhaps I also did not order what’s their specialty which I think I need to pay attention to in the future.
