Casa del Gelato (Auckland, New Zealand)
This post was quite late but I still want to post its review because this type of food fad, is quite unusual and very entertaining to most of our senses. I think we had visited this place around September – October last year but it’s still worth to share, first because they still sell them, second who does not want to share this amazing experience, it’s not called freak shakes at all for nothing.
During its peak there were several ice cream shops that started selling this and one of them was Casa del Gelato, located in Parnell we decided one day to have our doze of this Instagram phenomenon. The place is quite hard to find since it does not have its front on the main street but once you find the place you will be surprised; it has that good feeling to it that separates it from the other shops in the street. Its small, cute, colourful but with a very homey feel.
They serve all sorts of normal ice cream, coffee and tea but we were not here for that, we are here for their freak shakes.
There are lots of menu items for different freak shakes and yes all of them are freaky in a good way. From fruity shakes, candy shakes and chocolate/coffee shakes you name it they have it.
I love also how they made their menu, it was hand written, photos are not professionally taken and just just taped to the manually bound black menu book. I like this touch; it gives that extra homey feel to the place.
My daughter first order and she was more inclined to have chocolatey taste and since she liked Oreos we grabbed one Super Oreo ($17.00)
And I also wanted some coffee flavour so I grabbed some Extremely Ice Mocha ($14.00)
We also tried their Cappuccino ($4.50) to taste how their coffee compares with other coffee shop.
With our orders they gave us some disposable gloves because this can get really messy, with all of the chocolate syrup and ice cream hanging everywhere it is a must to use them. It was so good and it was a challenge to finish them, this thing is really good as a whole meal, once you finish one you will not want to have a dinner anymore. Ice cream, Oreo, shakes, chocolates, sweet cones what can go wrong? It was amazing but every bite you have you will feel the guilt of all that fat and sugar you are intaking but what the heck you don’t have this everyday so just enjoy life’s simple pleasure and have it once in a while.
And yes before I forget they coffee was great too.

We have a nice gelato place here and I did go and try – not going to go anymore after that, too expensive for the likes of me.
