Puhoi Valley Cafe and Cheese Store (Puhoi, New Zealand)

What’s good with New Zealand is that good remote places are really not that far, for example if you live in a metro area like Auckland in one hour or less you can be in a totally different place like a beach, forest, waterfalls or a nice cafe that is totally disconnected from the outside world. Our place of interest today is one good example, just 45 minutes from Auckland is this hidden gem, Puhoi Valley Cafe and Cheese Store.

Puhoi Valley Cafe and Cheese Store is located in Puhoi a place really popular for kayaking, it is also near great getaway locations like Wenderholm Regional Park, Waiwera and Orewa. You will also pass by this place when you are travelling up North like Matakana so if you are planning to visit any of these its best to stop by this cafe and see what they offer.

Just 4km’s away from the Main Highway, this place is so accessible yet when you are there you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. Puhoi Valley Cafe and Cheese Store offers a lot from different cheeses, milk, different dairy products and even cooked food.

The premises is quite huge for a place like this, I think they can sit a lot of diners, in my estimate about 100+, their dining area is divided into different sections, first is the ones near they products display, then the Al Fresco area and this big dining hall where you are surrounded by a big cheese room enclosed by mirror walls where some of their cheese blocks are left to mature.

Within the place they display their awards there are too many to mention but most of their cheeses even milks are multi awarded, and trust me the awards speak for it, I tried their cheeses and milk, they do taste amazing.

Anyways we came here not because of the cheese or their dairy products we already know they are great so for now we will be trying their cooked food. It a perfect time for brunch before we have our spa massage appointment at Waiwera at noon time.

I grabbed some Puhoi Valley Big Breakfast, an enormous plate filled with Farmhouse eggs cooked to your choice served with streaky bacon, twice cooked tomatoes, roasted field mushrooms, rosemary and garlic sautéed baby potatoes, kransky cheese sausage, home style toast and their own tomato relish. This was a real big breakfast and I loved it, every element on the plate was perfectly cooked and seasoned, special mention to the tomato relish which is one of the best I tried.

We also grabbed some Puhoi Welsh Rarebit, a blend of Puhoi Valley cheeses served fondue style with toasted five grain bread, streaky bacon, side salad & Chef’s tomato relish. I am not usually a fan of grain bread but this one was quite special, I can drop my good thick cut white sandwich with this one, not to mention the amazing fondue that came with it, it’s so good I want to drink it, even at the time I was writing this portion I am already drooling just by the thought of it.

For the drinks I got some of their fresh milk with real Belgian chocolate and this reminded me of the Magnolia Chocolait during the days when it was still delivered in bottles in Manila when I was young. Its creamy chocolatey delicious, that whole 750ml’s is not enough.

We enjoyed this brunch Al Fresco, just beside the beautiful view of the gardens and a man-made lake. It’s so quiet, private, serene and a nice place to start our day of relaxation definitely a perfect start of your itinerary if you’re planning to have a massage at Waiwera.

Just give around 2 hours before doing something else as it’s nice to just slowly enjoy a really good meal in a tranquil place like this.
