Description

Fried Okra is a dish popular in the American South made with okra dipped in buttermilk, coated with corn meal and or flour then deep fried then served with different sauces like ranch.


Ingredients

  • 500 g fresh okra, sliced 1/2-inch thick pieces
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/3 tsp onion powder
  • 1/3 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • salt
  • oil, for deep frying

Instructions

  1. In a container that you can cover combine together flour, cornmeal, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, ground black pepper and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl combine okra and buttermilk together.
  3. Prepare a deep fryer and heat oil to 180C.
  4. Piece by piece place the dipped okra into the flour mixture, do not over crowd. Cover the container then shake to coat okra pieces.
  5. Gently place the coated okra into the deep fryer and cook until golden brown in colour. Remove from oil then drain. Serve while hot.
