Chef Rasa Sayang (North Shore, New Zealand)
This was our second time here at Chef Rasa Sayang and nothing has changed, the food was still great and the taste was authentic similar to the dishes I had when I was still living in Malaysia. This establishment is located in Mokoia Road in Birkenhead, it’s a small establishment so make sure you reserve a seat when you want to dine in at peak hours.

Like any Malaysian restaurants in Auckland they serve the same menu items like Kuey Teow, Chicken Curry, Roti, Hokkien Mee, Satay and Rendang to name some. Having said that this restaurant have an edge as this is the most authentic Malaysian cuisine I tried so far in Auckland. Others I tried was also good but most of them are cooking the dishes to please Kiwi customers not Malays, this is where Chef Rasa Sayang differs. It’s a place where you will have Hokkien Mee that has that authentic burnt taste, the curries with the proper spice and an oily roti (which is the way it should to be).
You will also see a lot of Malaysians dining in the premises which means their dishes is really catering for the taste buds of their locals. There was even a time where I feel like I am in Malaysia because of the ambiance and the people surrounding you.
On both occasions we were here we ordered the same thing Chicken Curry, Hokkien Mee, Chicken Satay, Roti and some rice. Like I mentioned above the taste feels like it came from a sidewalk hawker kitchen in a Pasar Malam in Kuala Lumpur, it tastes exactly the same and it looks the same, I think the only difference in Pasar Malam you will have the added bonus of street dust and car exhaust pollution.
Definitely we will visit this place again and again, but next time we will be trying other dishes like the Char Kway Teow and if the made this like how it’s done in Kuala Lumpur using blood cockles I will really be impressed but I think that’s asking too much as those types of cockles are not available here.

That looks so yummy! Too bad there are no Malaysian restaurants in Vienna 🙁
I have never had Malaysian food…they sure look very tasty and packed with flavors…
Have a great day Raymund 🙂
Wow, everything looks so flavorful and delicious! I definitely have to try some Malaysian food sometime.
Malaysian foods are this weeks fave, have eaten a Malaysian feed every day. Sooooo good!
I’ve only eaten authentic Malaysian food in Malaysia. Everything here is to the Australian palate. I’d love this!
Love the pictures! And this sounds like such a terrific place. Have never had Malaysian food — would love to try it. I guess I’ll just have to make a trip!
