Monsoon Poon (Auckland CBD, New Zealand)
I think I dined in here more than four times and this was the first time I had written something about this restaurant, to bad this was also the time where I ordered the least because during the last three times I had tried their banquets menu where multiple dishes and appetizers were served.
Having said that if I would be comparing the ones I had before to the ones I had this time the flavours haven’t changed and as expected every meal we had pack tons of flavours. So what did I had this time around?
First we got some appetizers, the Firecracker Sliders ($16.00 for $3), basically it’s made with spiced chicken sandwiched in a fresh bun with a sauce they called dynamite mayo. This reminds me of the Zinger burger but in a small form.
After the appetizers we had the following mains, the Duck and Pineapple Curry ($24.00) which is a house roasted duck, eggplant and fresh pineapple in a red curry of lemongrass, kaffir lime and birds eye chilli. Well spiced and not too hot.
Then we had some Malay Hawker Fish and Prawns ($25.00), a wok fried fish and prawns in a kaffir lime, basil, spinach and ginger sauce with fresh chillies, this was my favourite of the bunch. The fish and prawns are crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside, this was an explosion of flavour.
We also had Roast Duck Noodles ($23.00) which are stir fried fresh egg noodles with house roasted duck wok tossed with green beans and black fungus mushroom. Its sweet, its savoury, its noodles done right not too dry and not too oily
All of these was enjoyed with rice for 2 people and with that it can feed 3 to 4 hungry diners as the servings was large. Its quite pricey compared to other restaurant with the same theme but this place is located in a tourist spot so it is expected. Anyways it’s not that overpriced and most importantly the food was consistently good an all four occasions I was here.
Located in the outskirts of the Viaduct Harbour just in the Lower Hobson St below the ramp highway this South East Asian fusion restaurant is easy to spot as it’s the only red coloured establishment on that corner. Parking is easy as well as it’s beside a really big carpark.
