Hula Dog (Honolulu, Hawaii)
I am not sure if there are other establishments like this in Hawaii but what I tried was the Hula Dog when we saw it when we were buying some groceries in the Food Pantry. While waiting outside for my wife I saw this hotdog place and it offers a quite unique flavour combination, flavours that is popular in Hawaii.
Hotdogs is a popular part of the American street food scene and it differs from one state to another depending on the popular produce on a certain location. In mainland America the differences might be subtle but in Hawaii their hotdogs are quite unique.
I am not sure if there are other establishments like this in Hawaii but what I tried was the Hula Dog when we saw it when we were buying some groceries in the Food Pantry. While waiting outside for my wife I saw this hotdog place and it offers a quite unique flavour combination, flavours that is popular in Hawaii. Think of taro, coconuts and tropical fruits, these were the exotic combination this establishment have to offer.
The ordering process looks similar to Subway where there are 5 steps involved for you to complete your order. First is the type of hotdog bun you want to have, options include White, Honey Wheat, Bacon Taro.
Second is options for hotdogs, one is Polish dog and another one is Veggie Dog.
Third is the option for roosted lemon garlic sauce starting from not hot to extremely hot, here I suggest if you like it hot then go for the hottest one as they are really not that hot compared to Asian standards.
Then came the fourth one which gives life to this dish, relish is then added and you have the option to choose any of the following: Mango, Papaya, Banana, Coconut, Star Apple and Pineapple. Finally the mustard where it’s either made with Lilikoi (Passion Fruit) or Guava.
I know the flavours sound crazy but it really works and surprisingly me and my daughter loved it, at $6.70 it’s a bit expensive compared to a burger in McDonalds but a good foo experience the combination of sweet relish and savoury hotdogs in a soft bun worked really well.
