Popa’s Pretzels (Auckland, New Zealand)

It was my wife who discovered this place called Popa’s Pretzels when one of our friends have brought this as a snack for one of their kids, she only remembered the packaging so since then we searched for this place. We Googled it and it directed us to 368 Queen St, Auckland. As we arrived the place was closed luckily there was a note that states that they had moved and it’s just one street away, now located at 350 Queen St Auckland.

The new place is smaller but I don’t care as we did not intend to dine in. The new place is just a take away place so you have to queue from the street if orders start to pile up. They have sweet and savoury pretzel variant ranging from $3.00 to $6.50 per piece. They also sell other stuff like manakish and Romanian barbecue.

There are ready made ones, I guess these were the savoury ones.

but we ordered the sweet ones. First was the chocolate pretzel

and the apple cinnamon pretzel. They look nearly the same but they have different fillings so don’t put them all in one bag so you know what you have even without biting it.

the ones we ordered as cooked as we order where you see they cut pre made dough flatten it, filled with your choice of sweet filling then rolled and tied like a pretzel. It is then quickly deep fried then baked in a conveyor oven. The whole preparation time is around 5 minutes. So you will wait a bit for your order but at least you know it’s freshly made.

So what’s the verdict! I love the texture of the dough it’s soft and chewy when hot. I never tried it when it’s cold so I can’t tell, anyways once you bite it I guess you will finish the whole thing immediately as it’s addictive. The apple cinnamon filling resembles the apple pie of McDonalds but more cinnamony (if there’s such a word) while the chocolate feels like a melted chocolate bar, it’s amazing. Definitely will try this again once we passed by the place.
