Glenfield Night Market – A Visual Essay

Glenfield Night Market is not just all about food, half of the place offer goods and services like fresh produce, massages, manicures, mobile phone cases, etc. It’s like home away from home, most Asians will feel at home in here, there are tons of people in here, it’s a very Asian style market feel. For us Asians it is a common sight, sound, smell and taste that we are used to.

When I first came here in New Zealand one of the things I missed were the street food scene popular in Asian Countries, the only next best thing during those times were the Mall Food Courts, Queen Street and Sunday Markets but it’s not run at night and don’t have that Asian market feel until the Night Markets started.

I don’t know its exact origins but the first night market that I heard of was in Pakuranga Plaza around 2009 – 2010, I never been there but I heard a lot of good things about it. Since then I was wondering what I would expect from these night markets until the mall near our place started to have this every Saturday and Sunday. Usually they are located in parking lots of shopping malls as temperature in New Zealand drops to really cold during the evenings so don’t think of it like the ones you see in Asian countries where they are located on streets but it was amazing, there are a lots of selection, more selection than what we have in Asian countries because Auckland is a very multicultural city, hence most of the mainstream countries street food are represented cooked by the nationals the food represents.

Having said that the place is not just all about food, half of the place offer goods and services like fresh produce, massages, manicures, mobile phone cases, etc. It’s like home away from home, most Asians will feel at home in here, there are tons of people in here, it’s a very Asian style market feel. For us Asians it is a common sight, sound, smell and taste that we are used to.

Today instead of a recipe or a dining experience I will share a visual essay of what you can expect in a Night Market here in Auckland.

  3. Awesome … I love food festivals. The calories don’t technically count as you are walking (getting in exercise) from stall to stall trying all the deliciousness, great selection, what is bubble tea? And drool at the pile of buns. Yarm!

I am so jealous of your night market!!! We have nothing like that here and I would just love spending my evening wandering and eating. What a great way to spend an evening and look at all of that great looking food!! Thanks for sharing, even though I’m very jealous.
