When we crave for crabs we usually go to Asian shops and buy some, but recently they are always out of stock even if we go early hours in the morning. I guess some Asians are faster them me and crave more than I do. Anyways I was glad that a colleague of mine introduced me to this website where you can order fresh and reasonably priced seafood online, the website is called Hawkes Bay Seafood, they deliver the next morning and seafood is still fresh. I then did signed up for newsletters so I get informed when new stock arrives. One day I received a newsletter and it says they have fresh crabs, I read the newsletter a bit late might be after two hours so when we visited the site it was out of stock, even online they are faster. What my colleague then did (since we are programmers) is he developed an application that will check their website if crabs are available from their site, he got that idea when I made a similar one for a console game website and checks it for very low priced games. What the application does is that it informs us in our workstations if a stock we want is available, one time it popped up and saying that the crabs that we are after are available, we did not wasted our time and ordered 5 kilos of them. Next day it arrived and I was excited to cook them.
There are a lot of dishes that you can cook with crabs but sometimes like beef it is best when eaten just on its own with mild spices and herbs. So for today we will just be making some cracked crabs which basically boiled crabs which is lightly hot served with melted hot butter, it’s simple yet so good best enjoyed with corn.
- 1 dozen live medium sized crabs (paddle or blue crabs)
- 2 litres water
- 1 tsp celery seeds
- 2 tsp cayenne
- 2 pcs bay leaves
- freshly ground black pepper
- 1 cup butter, melted
- ¼ cup hot sauce
- In a large stock pot add water, celery seeds, cayenne, bay leaves, freshly ground black pepper and salt. Bring it to a boil then add crabs, cook for 5 minutes.
- Remove crabs from pot then set aside.
- Mix together butter sauce ingredients then serve with crabs.
