Monzaemon Mengushi – 門左衛門麺.串 (Kyoto, Japan)

If there is a place that is best in convenience then the trophy would be awarded to Japan, take this place for example, an udon restaurant conveniently located in a central train station so you can grab a lunch or dinner between changing trains, you don’t even need to talk to someone when you order as it is all handled by a vendo machine.

Don’t get me wrong even though you order on a vendo machine, priced really reasonable and dine in on a standing standing position the food here tastes amazing, it is as par as those popular soba noodles you get in Hawaii.

The only issue I had with this is that if you don’t read Japanese then all I can say to you is good luck since the menu is written in their local language, but dont loose hope since you can still press some buttons randomly and hope for the best or you can also ask someone who might be rushing to grab another train and let them translate the menu items for you, anyways most Japanese are so helpful and that’s what we did but just for confirmation, there were also buttons with pictures and luckily those are the ones that we like.

The vendo machine handles your payment so make sure you have your Yen handy then once paid you will be given a ticket which you can give to the chef who will prepare you meal. Wait on the stand up only table and in less than a minute you have a hot bowl of freshly prepared udon.

I tried their Soba and Tonkatsu with Egg gravy combo (¥650.00)

We also had Soba with Egg and Kamaboko (¥420.00)

and a Tempura Soba (¥550.00)

with these orders, you can add free topping like the tenkasu (tempura crumbs) as well as different spices like the usual shichimi togarashi.

All soba dishes use the same base and same noodles, they just differ toppings. Base stock was very tasty and soba was good and really chewy, everything was spot on as expected. For the rice topping I loved it as well, there was a good serving of meat which I really liked, it is then enhanced by a rich egg gravy which was perfect with the freshly cooked rice.

This place is something new for me I enjoyed it but some people might not agree specially if you want a place to dine where you relax and stay for a while. If you are in a hurry and hungry and don’t mind standing then this is the perfect place to be.
