Not every day you can have a taste of what’s included in the top 20 Pizza in the world as definitely most of them will be in Italy but we have one in here right before our very doorstep in Auckland. I have been wanting to dine in here for a long time after my colleague recommended it to me but due to time constraints I did not had a chance until now.

Located in Ponsonby this place is situated in the corner of Ponsonby St and Summer St, it’s not that big establishment but I heard this place can be packed with people during peak times. But when we dined in here we were quite lucky as there were few. We came in sometime between 8:30 to 9:00 and most of the patrons were already finished with their dinner so there were ample seats for us to choose from.

We chose the seating between the bar and the pizza oven so we can see how their pizzas were made. I grabbed first some Italian Light Beer, PERONI LEGGERA 330ml ($8.50) while looking for what we need to try.

We also grabbed some Calamari ($16.50) which is a deep fried salt and pepper squid and crispy vegetables served with a sweet and sour sauce.

While enjoying these, we asked one of the chefs what pizza and pasta they can recommend, he said all of them were good but his personal preference was Capricciosa and Ragú del Giorno hence we ordered them.

Capricciosa ($22.50) is a pizza topped with San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte mozzarella, free range champagne ham, homemade pickle NZ artichoke, olive and extra virgin olive oil.

While the Ragú del Giorno ($23.50) is a ragu of beef served on a pasta of choice between Tagliatelle, Rigatoni, Cassarecce or Gnocchi, we chose the Tagliatelle.

The food was great and we loved how authentic they make their pizzas and pasta. It reminded me of the restaurants in Italy where most if not all of the pizzas were cooked in a wood burning stone oven and it takes around 5 minutes or less to cook the pizza. We loved the texture of the dough which is definitely comparable if not better than the ones we tried in Italy. The pasta was great too. I love the chewiness of the noodles, perfectly cooked al dente style.

The calamari on the other hand was surprising as we expected large chunks of squid rings, it was the other way around. The squids are small and served with some crispy vegetables. It was okay but not as what we expected it to be. I guess this dish stayed true to its Italian roots as fritti served in the streets and restaurants of Italy resemble this one.

Overall the experience was great, the chef and waiters were helpful and the food is amazing. If you are planning to visit, I suggest you come not on peak hours otherwise make a reservation ahead of time.

  1. I love a good pizza! And like the Naples-style ones (and this looks like a dead ringer for that). Sounds like a terrific place — thanks!

I only had Hell’s Pizza in Auckland. Didn’t even get to try the ones at an Italian restaurant I went to at Newmarket:
