Golden Phoenix Chinese Restaurant (North Shore City, New Zealand)
Birkenhead in New Zealand’s North Shore City has a lot of restaurants and other food establishments and we are quite regular here as we have some of our favourite restaurants located in the vicinity. Every time we go here we always see this restaurant on the second floor of the building beside the Fresh N Save Asian Shop and was intrigued what it offers. Even though we always see them I don’t know why we never dined in, might be its not that inviting or the location is not that handy? Luckily when a large group of us wanted to grab something after some Filipino community gathering the restaurant we are after was closed and this establishment was the one in front of it. We then crossed the road and see whether there are tables available for our large group, to our surprise there were lots of empty tables and we were seated immediately.
I know empty tables is a bad sign but there must be some other reasons, it might be already late at night in winter. There are also a few staff so I guess they know that there are a few people that comes in at that time in this season. I checked the cleanliness grade and that’s what I usually look for when dining in at a Chinese restaurant and they have “A” at the time of this writing. So with some hesitation because of the lack of people eating we ordered.
We were given the menus and their specialties are marked visibly, we ordered and like any other Chinese restaurants they are prepared on demand hence the orders come as they are cooked. I will not describe them one by one as they are the usual menu items that you see in restaurants but this is what we ordered.
First is the lemon chicken which was our least favourite, it is crispy and it tasted alright but nothing spectacular.
then spicy salt squid which was amazing, this can go well with beer.
then the sweet and sour pork which was the best of the bunch, I guess this is the best sweet and sour pork I ever tried in New Zealand. It’s so crispy and the taste is not really strong like the usual ones which are super sweet and vinegary (if there is such a word).
Then some steamed gailan which I also loved, its fresh and crispy.
Then some fried rice, a must if you are a Filipino 🙂
Then the braised Tofu which I also enjoyed.
All of their dishes are good and one thing I noticed it is not strong in taste like the usual, they are all seasoned perfectly not too salty or not sweet. It also does not have that sesame oil after taste that you get in Chinese restaurants.
